Sanko CroMo?

Posted on
  • Anyone heard of this tubing? A Google reveals it's used for a lot of MTBs and BMXes but I never heard of it before I got my hands on a frame made of it at the weekend. ANy info appreciated.

  • crMo in all its creations is generally standard mass produced stuff nowdays.

  • I know WeThePeople and Mutiny plus a few others build some of their BMX frames out of it. Found this reply on a forum too...

"Sanko is a factory that makes metal tubes in japan and they make 4130 chromoly.. so when in your frame says sanko 4130 chromoly, the tubes are made by this guys"

  • just 4130 chromoly, standard strong heavy

  • Th integrity of 4130 chromo depends highly on who made it. The slightest imbalances of the alloys or any impurities can drastically reduce strength.

Thats why cheap 4130 bikes are either weak or heavily overbuilt with fat tubing & loads of gussets.

Good quality reliable 4130 (of which sanko is one of the best) can be used to build much lighter bikes which are just as/ or much more stronger than overbuilt cheap counterparts.

I remember george french of gsport bmx writing an article about chromo tubing a while back. Look about on the net for it.

  • but at the end of the day
    its still a generic alloy
and take the fact that its never going to be as light
as say a bike built with good quality reynolds tubing
    or such

  • I've got a Sunday BMX which is Sanko 4130. Beautiful. But I'd say it's probably overkill for a fixed wheel.

  • i beleive the volume cutter my frameset is all cromo i dont know what type of cromo

I'm a cretin. My surly is made of 4130 Cro-mo (They don't say which breed).

    4130 Frames for the win.

  • My Swobo sanchez is 4130 cromo also, all my past bikes (bmxes up until about 10 years back) have also been full 4130 cromo, tough reliable, and with just enough flex to give decent ride quality IMO. My old terrbile one barcode (bmx) was an amazingly tough frame, I landed a dodgy 180 or 360 years back on mine from 7-8ft up and what would have snapped most frames clean through, only twisted the rear triangle on mine by about 15 degrees, made the frame unrideable but by the same token I was impressed that it stayed in one piece, 4130 for life yo!

  • It is more to do with how the frame is put together, how well welded, how good the process was, if the tubes are butted, how much they are butted etc,. than the material.
I defy anyone to be able to tell the difference between a well made butted 4130 frame and a Reynolds 531 frame.

Although a lot of people seem to think they can!

  • I think charge use sanko cromo

  • didn't Pashley make a BMX frame from 531?
