Integrated headset gap

Posted on
  • Picked up my new road bike today and it has an integrated headset (cane creek IS 2). There is a large gap between the top of the headtube and the upper cover.

Any ideas on how to remedy? Never had an integrated headset before.

Apologies for poor photo.... iPhone only looks pretty

  • take it straight back!

  • Not a Planet X is it? Seen something similar on one of those before, might be something to do with a split washer not sitting into the bearings properly in the top IIRC.

Being a bore... so post a photo and the question in the road gear and know how in bikeradar. Someone will probs know

  • I had the problem. I replaced the stock bearings in my langster a couple of weeks ago.

The problem was firstly that there wasnt a "spacer" type moulding on the underside of the IS2 cap. I ended up tightening the cap so there was no play in the assembly, but as the bearings weren't being compressed the headset was binding, if that makes sense.

I tried it with a 5mm stem spacer under the cap and it then moved freely, but with a bigger gap than in your picture.

I fished the old headset out of the bin to see if I was missing a trick and discovered a rubber gasket with a spacer type moulding that I fitted, and it works a treat now.

I'll try and post a picture later if that helps.

Sorry if that's a bit wordy, but it looks like you're missing one piece of the assembly.
