On the above note, Swindon has returned to it's status as a filthy hole.
Snow melted, slow crawl home on the cross tires that I'm still going to have to run for the rest of this week to stay upright on the overnight freeze.
Or possibly not, just looked out the window and it's snowing again. I know I'm going to pay for this sooner or later, but it does look a little pretty right now.

The thing I liked about the snow was that early in the morning yesterday London actually looked clean for once.
what do u want from life Tommy ? a clean world ?

Only clean as in no rubbish way. Life without dirty grls would not be much fun.
Still some nasty black ice out there this morning.
Rode up via Blackheath this morning and the heath looked amazing.

I just looked out of my front door and all I can see is hefty amounts of ice.
I have a feeling it's probably fine once you get off my road, but I might just get the train to avoid the inevitable landing on my arse within about 5 metres.

Cycled up from Caribbean Catford today, as I'd slept over at a friend's house, near Old Street the night before.
Nice ride in. Some patches of black ice, but not that many. I think the gritters were doing overtime shifts last night.
Burst water-main on Southend Lane, near the Lidl's, is a 20 metre ice-rink. I went across it and prayed to Tynan.

all the main roads are pretty much ok now, just the smaller side roads that are covered in compacted ice.

Looks like the west country is in for the killer triple tonight.
A nice layer of hardpack ice, some slush with a frozen hard crust on top and a brand new layer of fresh powder. This should be fun.

I will be buying Nokian Hakkapelitta w106 when they are reduced in the spring.
To replace my god awful hardware store branded winter tyres. -

This looks like a fun test. Ride various tyres around a icerink.
http://www.pinkbike.com/news/article2340.htmlBut for commuting, your looking at..
Nokion hakkapelitta
Nokion Mount and ground
Schwalbe snow studd
Schwalbe winter marathon
Kenda klondike
Conti nordic spikeThere are loads more, but they are more for off-road use. I am tempted to get the winter marathon for next winter (roll better on clear days), but they are a bit over-priced. So I will most likely go for the hakka's.
When my SS 29r is finished I'll be in the market for some hardcore tyres for winter off-roading but I have'nt seen anything over 45mm in 700c, as of yet.

Kirk from alaska offers a word of caution against the hakka's in specific conditions linky
Cheers for the link.
I was aware of the problem with only having central studs. Should'nt be such a problem for my use, but was considering the 240 version for the front (the snow plough often leaves slushy tractor tracks which freeze overnight).
This made me laugh (in an ironic manner)
"Avoid the ones sold under the Innova brand, cheap with soft steel studs. They suck. I've seen the studs on other peoples bikes wear down into the tire after only a few blocks on pavement. They suck, he adds again for emphasis"
They're the ones I have now! I would add that not only are the studs bloody soft, but the rubber is bloody hard too. It gives shite grip on frosty roads.
