anybody/vintagers have any views on why these ends are pointing downward rather than in-line with the chainstays?

man I'd love to build myself a classic Peugeot road bike, everyone is doing Colnago, Bianchi, Bob Jackson, etc. don't see many classic Peugeot road bike out there.
I think they are frowned upon because they made so many rough cheap bikes, often in the same livery. Plus the fact that odd bb threadings & seatpost sizes are common.
I had an awesome peugout road bike, it was my first 700c bike about 3 years ago. It had all shimano 105 groupset inc really nice pedals. It was pearl pink and had really well made 531 frame. Great bike it was, sold it for £150 to fund fixed gear bike - doh!

I'm sure that's a re-list of a recent auction. Better piccies this time though.

Ive got them cranks on one of my bikes, gentle town cruiser. Would say they are not suited for a fast bike. The chainring is steel & flexy, it can develop wobbles.

*they look to be non original track ends but I could be wrong, I've owned a few Hetchins track irons and none have had rear ends that pointed downwards in that way....one way to check is if the frame number is stamped on one of the rear track ends as they usually were, that would tell if they were original, (I'm getting anal now!) * -
