I like Deda stems, but you are really spoilt for choice. It would help knowing what type of build you are planning. Thompson are pricey but awesome.

I've been using and am impressed with Pro XLT and PLT
4 bolt clamps, nice and light, stiff enough

the build is going to be a bit of a mash up - not really doing it any particular style. more street than track - it will be used at HH but not regularly. I'm fitting it with risers (as i've tried everything else), prob gonna go for nitto's so would ideally be the right clamp size for them, but nothing's set in stone - for the right stem, i'd be happy to fit any old risers really.
cheers for those ideas tho, i'm gonna check em out now. -

interesting to see parker have the 3T mutant quill stems. I always had a bit of a soft spot for those.

it seems that most a head stems ive been looking at are 1"1 8th... i'm looking for a 1". i heard someone say that they were easy to shim. was this mystery person talking shit? have i just not been looking hard enough/properly (totally possible as i am a lazy bastard)...?
-

If you're after a 1" you shouldn't need a shim

A lot of 1 1/8" stems come with a shim for a 1" steerer.
I recently got a Pro LT stem off Parkers. I thought it was good value for money.

Yeah they nearly all come with a shim, that's what I'm using... If I could remember the name of my ste m I'd be in business but I bought it years ago for my BMX, painted it and then didn't use it for ages, can't remember what brand it is even, it's a nice light aluminium one ... not very helpful is it...

so, basically what u are saying is that buying a stem with a shim is almost the norm. u can get 1 inch, but providing a 1 1/8" comes with a shim it will work as well as a 1 inch... is that right, or is it still best to try and buy a 1 inch?

cinelli alter
and its 1 inch

Yeah 1 1/8" would be fine with a shim!

Bit of a thread resurrection sorry but I need some help. I am having real, real trouble finding the right a-head stem for my current build.
Its a Bob Jackson, and with hindsight I think I should have gone for a threaded fork as I just cannot find a subtle a-head stem in silver to go with the slim tubing.
The Nitto CT-80 below is pretty much perfect except I want my stem to be parallel to the top tube and the Nittos are 0 degree. I need the stem to be at the very least -10 degrees but preferably -15 degree. It also needs to be 100-110mm in length. Oh yeah and preferably 25.4 clamp size - though I could always shim a 26mm - I don't want much I know!
I found a stem on the Kalloy website (http://www.kalloyuno.com/productuno.htm) below which looks just about right but I can't find it anywhere in the UK
Or should I just bite the bullet and get some new threaded forks? I don't really want to do that so any help would be really appreciated.

Threaded forks and a quill definitely look better on steel tubed frames. I have never seen an ahead that looks good. Pity really as I find aheads a much better solution (lighter, no flex) but they just look too chunky for a nice steel frame.
The Salsa SUL stem is probably nearest as it looks more slender but difficult to get in silver/polished.

Cheers for the replys guys - it looks like organicorigin has come up with the goods - cheers!
sorry to have started another boring thread about boring things, but...
was wondering if people can give me some ideas about what stem to go for. i really dont know much about a-head stems, what brands, style etc.
i wanted around 90/100mm, prob with a 10 degree drop/rise (reversible).
i know thompson elite are good, but they're pretty pricy...any ideas welcome.
cheers.
