This isn't directed at anyone, it's just a rant..
Animals are generally more intelligent than we think but I hate it when people try to compare it to human intelligence. Whether it's our capacity to learn, communicate and develop abstract ideas (etc), no other species comes close. I find instinct and routine is often confused with intelligence.
That is certainly true of people. It's the other way around with many animals: Intelligence is often confused with instinct and routine!
Less provocatively, as long as no-one can really say what 'intelligence' actually is (the current status quo), there is little point in trying to reach definitive conclusions as to where it occurs. But it is clear that we have a lot to learn about it, and understanding how animals think without dismissing them as entirely stupid and instinct-driven, is certainly helpful.
