  • Just used grease and torque wrench.

Me too. It seems that most bicycle related problems are due to either over-tightening or under-tightening. A torque wrench takes the mystery out of it all.

    Hey
The Primato bb needs a good mechanic to install.

Err, not really :S Just a bit of thought, some care and commonsense.

Everything I know about bicycles is from taking apart my bicycle as a kid, putting it back together again, Zinn and Sheldon.

  • Same story here. I installed mine myself (with a ratchet rather than torque wrench). Must have got lucky because it's been fine. One of my LBSs don't even use torque wrenches. Like Bruce Lee they don't think...they feel.

    :-)

    Hmmmm.

  • It's a proven method.

  • They've built a thousand Apollos...

  • heheheh, that's genius :)

i'd like one of his monospokes too.

  • Ok, slight derail - there's several threads about these Miche BBs a) Unscrewing themselves, b) Being a bit crap, but has anyone experienced the actual BB spindle becoming slightly loose/wobbly?

I thought I had a loose crank, but it turns out that's on as tight as hell, and I don't think the cups are unscrewing themselves. There's just about 1-2mm of give if you try and move the crank arm from side to side.

Am I imagining it, confusing it with a different issue or worrying about nothing?

    cheers!

  • In a cup and cone BB that definitely means that the cups (on one side or the other) are loose.

BTW Miche are cartridge though (not cup & cone).

If the thing is tight into the frame and the play from the axle... then that's maybe worn bearings, and it's on it's last legs.

When a bb is shagged I usually notice a 'ting' sound from a bb before i feel any play. When I feel some play I know it's time to bin it.

  • Mine recently went in exactly the same way. I think it was my third to go wrong in the last 9 months or so. I've swapped to Phil Wood now.

Your bike is fucked. Give it to me.

  • probably loose cup, compared to shagged bearings

  • If I were to swap a Miche BB to something else, what would be its equivalent? Some Campagnolo road BB? (The cranks are Miche Advanced.)

  • ^ I'm not sure there are any other exact equivalents to the Miche 107mm JIS BB. I know I've read on here that other people have had success with a Campagnolo (Centaur?) - UTFS time for you dude ;-)

  • Man, I've no idea what UTFS means...

  • if you're serious: hold your mouse over the word UTFS

    if you're not: you're a cockstand

  • if you're serious: hold your mouse over the word UTFS

Live and learn! (I really didn't know of the mouse-over feature.)

  • search for transmission database

  • used it for 2 builds.
    never again.
same thing has occured on both bb's.
    it undoes itself.
and the first one was installed by a bike mechanic. its a bb not an engine, its a piece of piss to fit.
i've since removed one from a build and now i can't get it back on.
    fuck these bb's

You're lucky - mine fucking refuses to budge.
As noted in other threads, the Campag tool that is supposed to fit has only succeeded in wearing metal off the teeth on the inside of the cup (yes I'm turning it the right way)

Like the quote above says - never again.

  • I've used the search, but couldn't find an answer to this question.

I've just taken the cranks off my Miche Primato BB to inspect them, as they had come loose 2 or 3 times now. The edges don't seem to have rounded off, so I guess I'm going to just clean, leave to dry and re-install with a lot more force than previously (the cranks are Miche). However, just turning the spindle I noticed it doesn't feel very smooth. It's about 7 months old and I'm think I remember it not being that smooth to begin with anyway. So, my question is, does this have any effect during actual riding, and what is the different between a quality BB and a cheaper one like the Miche? Does it alter the characteristics of the ride?

  • Miche BB's are not good. The only thing 'miche' on them is the cups, the cartridge unit is made by Kinex (rubbish)

Saying that, even the cups are bad as the teeth are very soft and are easily rounded when trying to remove.

If you have to use one, i recommend using a good amount of Shimano Anti-seize grease and to grease the inside of the cups where the cartridge unit will be sitting.

James1822- for your cranks, don't over tighten the crank bolts, this causes them to sit too far down onto the BB axle and will damage the taper. You need to torque the bolts to about 42-45nm (check that)
A quality bb will simply have better quality everything...basically!
