simplest method in mental arithmetic is to divide chainwheel teeth by rear cog teeth then times wheelsize
ie: 48t chainwheel divided by 17t sprocket times 27" wheel = 76 inches -

I use a scalpel or other sharp blade and wiggle it until it pops out. Be sure to fill the hole it left with a decent glue (super glue works well).

I have a stock bowery (46x17) and it feels a bit under geared.
what is the magic formula for calculating the gear inchage?
