  • A change to much colder conditions is now underway as winds turn into the east and begin to pull in much colder continental air.

Snow flurries have already been reported from eastern and southeastern England this morning, and these are expected to gradually turn heavier and more frequent during this afternoon and evening.

With a deep cold pool of air now moving in from the east, heavy and persistent snow showers will continue over many central and eastern parts of Britain during Sunday night and Monday, and these may well spread their way further inland at times too, giving significant accumulations in places.

Snowfalls of up to 10cm are likely in places, giving potentially disruptive conditions.

On Monday, further snow showers will affect many central and eastern areas, before an area of more persistent snow moves up from the southeast. This area of snow brings the potential for widespread snowfall, with accumulations of up to 20cm in places. The snow will turn more to sleet and rain in the far southeast of England and East Anglia during Monday afternoon.

Thereafter matters become truly complicated. The shallow low may drift close enough to southern England to allow comparatively milder conditions to be created over some southern areas, perhaps only for a time. Should that happen any snow would turn back to rain or drizzle apart from over higher ground.

In addition, by Tuesday, much of the air reaching southern parts will be originating from a relatively less cold central Europe. This said, northern Britain is most likely to continue sourcing air from further east, which will remain colder and, hence, offer the risk of further snow showers - some heavy.

so, in summary, stay in, crack open a bottle of something and let the outside world go and fuck itself to hell.

think I'll walk to work tomorrow...
