it's all about the correct BB to give a decent chainline.
sheldon has some measurements on that for using road cranks.
you might also want to think about crank length...are they 165, 170? or longer? not everyone likes 170 cranks for fixed and on the track they might be too long if your frame doesn't have a high BB

thanks for replying - will have a look on sheldons site
the bike is going to be used on the road and for TTs so want 175 cranks (im 6'4")

If you want to use road double cranks for SS / Fixed you will need a shorter BB (assuming that you want to mount the chainring on the outside position of the spider.)
You would have an easier time with an older chainset which uses a longer standard BB (the old strada cranks used 115mm), as an 111mm bottom bracket would sort you out easily.
More modern square taper cranks from campag have been optimised for maximum stiffness and minimum Q-factor, hance the super-short 102mm BB. This is the spanner in your works.
I think the MIche 107mm could work, but you would need to mount the chainring in the inner position and it would look a little awkward. -

I use a campag double on my bike and its fine, not sure what the bb size is. Lots of other folk use road double chainsets as well, check out the transmission database. Also if running fixed you want to think about pedal strike (for when the cranks are too long) when going round corners but if your just using cranks that are lying around you may not have that luxury.

should be fine. half the 'pista' stuff you see on ebay is filed down road stuff anyway. more likely to have a problem with the bb length.

I have a set of Campag Chorus on my Mercian and it all works fine with the Miche 107mm BB.
Adjustable cups FT chainline W!
i was wondering if its possible to use a campag chorus road chainset (that i have lying around) put on a 1/8 chainring and fit it onto a miche primato BB for my track build.
will i be able to get it to work/ get a good chainline - or is theree a reason it wont work????
i know chorus road chainsets usually need a 102mm BB axel length and the miche is 107mm - is this a problem???
just trying to save buying a new track crankset when i have a few old road ones around.
thanks
