Worn cog/chainring?

Posted on
  • I've just changed the chain on my conversion and now there seems to be some creaking noises coming from it, especially when putting any kind of force on the pedals. Could it be a worn cog/chain ring on new chain problem? I thought fixed cogs and large chainrings were both pretty resistant to wear, compared to geared sprockets. The other thing is, it wasn't noticeable when I first put it on, but the next day when it got a soaking in the rain, it started making these noises. The chainring/cog are second hand, so I don't know how much use they've had, but don't look too wavey.

  • Sounds like your chainring and sprocket are worn - I have had this problem - have changed the chain on my bike regularly but it has done about 8000 miles on the same chainring / sprocket so last time I put a new chain on it made the creaking / grinding noise you described. Don't worry, it will dissappear when your chain starts to wear.

  • Try checking your chainring bolts.. also, did you tighten the chain up too much?

  • I thought that might be the problem, because I'd put in a half link to tighten the chain a bit as well. But when I slackened the chain slightly it still made the noise. I reckon I'll try and ride it for a while to see if the chain wears down. Bike's not worth spending loads on new parts.

    Cheers

  • oil it?
