Is there a book to accompany "The Final Hour", the Chris Boardman DVD ?
If so, anyone finished with it.
Google hasn't helped, or told me there isn't one

I finished 'The Hour' - stevo_com is probably picking it up this week. It was quite a page-turner, especially for someone doing TT training, and a bizarre insight into the warped minds that constitute the UCI.

I reckon i have overreached as i've only just started the flying scotsman, with another to go after that. So if anyone else wants the hour don't hold it on my account.
-
• #32
ahem. i haz copy of 'the escape artist' if anybody wants it. let me know.

pedal please!
Hey Sol,
A freind of mine is in that apparently, I would really like to see it sometime. -

So, as stevo_com's currently crushed under the weight of his veloliterary stack, who wants to be next in line for:

oh god how The Beautiful Machine bored me to tears. I couldn't even bring myself to freecycle it and impose it on anyone else.
teddy, photoben, superprecise, george sportif - any of you lot at the rollers later can bring your book

I sort of know what you mean. He's a strange bloke, and the chapters about America near the end are fucking terrible.
But I didn't mind the Alpine/Pyrenean/Kentish bits - I always like getting inside others people's heads on climbs.
And his upbringing wasn't entirely dissimilar to mine, so I got something from the early chapters.

yeah i was being a little harsh - it had it's moments. but america and the stuff in africa left me cold.
am glad you enjoyed The Hour. he had a lovely simple writing style.
hope the TT training is coming along nicely. did you recky the course last Sunday. wasn't a particularly nice day to be out there but tim and me got some good miles in.

'The Escape Artist' - an excellent read!
Another recommendation: 'Off the Map: Bicycling Across Siberia', by Mark Jenkins.
Contains some wonderful passages, both hilarious and moving. Fantastic bit where he describes an impromptu race with beautiful Russian girl - bike 'porn' definitely! -

2 more:
'Rough Ride' - Paul Kimmage
'Breaking the Chain' - Willy Voet -

Didn't make it out that far, jonny. Got a last minute toddlersitter Saturday night, drank a lot, slept in till 11 (first time in years), then decided on a quick North London hill thing in big gears - it absolutely chucked it down, getting progressively worse during the ride.
The TT training is going fine, thanks. Starting to get an idea of where I'm at. Unfortunately I can only hold Michael Hutchinson's Hour (45min) power for 10 minutes, but I'm happy with that at the moment, being a climber 'n' all.
You ready for the big cols?
-
• #42
Hi Jonny. No, haven't read that. I will add it to my personal 'must read' list. Thanks!
-
• #43
bmmf - always nice to get some extra zzz's.
far from ready from the big cols but out on the bike a lot so will be good come the time. will give you a holler when the tuesday night ride club gets back down in to the hills. and drop me a line when the TT stuff begins, migth get out there to check it out. if i can handle the early start.

Thread resurrection time.
I've just finished Major by Todd Balf, a biography of the black US cyclist, Marshall "Major" Taylor. I thought it fascinating and it details the cycling craze that swept the US in the last decade of the 19th century. Taylor was probably the most famous black man of his era and had to deal with horrific levels of racism.
I'll probably want the book back at some point but am happy to loan it to interested readers in the meantime. Let me know if you're interested.

I wouldn't mind having a look at the Obree one if it's still available for loan?
