Selling a High Quality, but damaged Wheelset

  • Hi all,

Im looking to sell my Carbon Wheelset. These were purchased when i bought my Trigon bike second hand. They are carbon rims, 50mm deep with flat aero spokes.

The front wheel runs true and is in perfect (or as good as condition) and can be seen on my TT fixed bike.

The rear carbon rim has started cracking and i have been advised to get this rebuilt.

I have spoken to the wheel builder at trigon and its going to be around £350 per wheel to rebuild! As im not happy at paying this i would like to sell them. However, what is the best way? They retailed for £900 new and the front is mint, but the rear is damaged.
Hubs, spokes and cassette holder are in top condition though.

Any rough estimate on sale price? Front comes with conti GP4000 tub in good condition.

so the rim is fucked and seriously dangerous, so you want to sell it? are you a mental?

  • He's riding £900 carbon wheelset to work.. I think the answer is "yes, mental" :)

    Or rich.

  • +1 to fred's sentiment, the front wheel is worth a bit, but not as much as you hope as it is a tub and will hold very little interest in the hipster market, and the type of people who would be buying tubs are not the kind of people who would buy second hand wheels or a singular front one.

a f*cked geared rear tub is virtually worthless.

i reckon you would be lucky to get £150 for the pair, so would say just keep the front on the TT bike that it is on!

  • Some of the youngsters like to skid on tubs.
    More fool them...

    Either of the above.. ;)

Joking aside though who are the rims made by?

Depending on how bad the damage is (and whether they are "worth" repairing) It is possible to repair carbon fibre.

But to the paranoid, (perhaps overly) "sensible" mind, you are selling a rear 24H? hub, part worn cassette a lock ring and a front wheel. (spokes aren't worth scrap).

So, I would work on the price of the front wheel secondhand if you were to sell and what the rear hub/wheel is worth to you or anyone else..

As Sainsbury's Ed said, prob best hang on to the front and either re-lace the rear with a Corima (or alternate aftermarket) style rim or sell/"file" the hub.

  • Keep the front and buy a new rear, single wheels are less marketable than a pair so you might get a ghibli ay a bargain price. Dismantle the rear damaged and sell the good bits.

  • who did you speak to at trigon?

  • necklace

  • I'm interested in the front.

  • I'm interested in the front.

It's a tub... are you sure?

  • skidding on tubs works out at about £30 per skid
you gotta be bill gates to skid these days !

  • It's a tub... are you sure?

yeah would be a laugh at the right price.

  • because you can never have enough tubular front wheels, right?!

  • or girlfriends. well thats what he told me.

    so n+1 holds true.

    so n+1 holds true.

as presumably does a £450 carbon wheel

well i'm less interested at that price!
