I find working on my bike a load of fun. I reckon the best way without doing a course and purely for the sake of mending your own bike and your friends' would be to work on it and just throw yourself in, keep track of how stuff went together when you took it apart and put it back together after having taken it apart. Personally, I love getting my hands dirty but I have yet to wheel build, look at what a bottom bracket looks like although I have a fairly good idea, and same with hubs n headsets.
Btw, I'm honoured that hillbilly was the one who tightened my lockring a few weeks back. Was good meeting you a few days ago (I was the blonde fellah in the high vis with the charge freestyler. Good to meet matt moose too!
