  • .......am I missing something, what is the point of skidding? teaching yoursef bike control in a 35mph criterium is so much more satisfying

Not everyone races. What's satisfying to you may induce utter boredom in others and vice versa.

  • what is your crank and bb combo? perhaps you're mixing JIS and ISO and so the cranks aren't sitting very tight on the spindle.

so a campy record bb should marry up fine to a pair of old shimano 600 cranks ?
    jis vs iso
i've mixed a matched JIS and ISO a couple of times, only change the chainline.

i don't grease spindles, they are meant to bind to the crank and with grease they don't as well.

  • I've always wondered about that, I do grease the spindles and haven't had a problem. I was thinking along the same lines as greasing threads. The grease removes the friction that stops you from getting things tighter. Still always needed a crank puller and a decent spanner to get them off again.

  • different opinions. a thread is for doing and un-doing, a crank is more permanant.

  • fair enough

  • @ stevo_com ah trusty info from sheldon
so in theory those shimano 600's should fit ok on the campy bb
    mine keep coming loose though
i wonder if other issues such as crank bolt length might come in to play ? if the bolts are forced away from the bb spindle by the difference in tapers could the bolts need replacing ? i.e. longer ones more reach / grip ? ?

  • " if you install a J.I.S. crank on an ISO spindle, it will wind up about 4.5 mm farther in"

so the opposite is happening to what you think, if anything you'd need shorter bolts but I've never heard of that. I don't even know if you could bottom out the bolt in the spindle by itself.

  • what is your crank and bb combo? perhaps you're mixing JIS and ISO and so the cranks aren't sitting very tight on the spindle.

This is a valid point, the tapers are different angles, so a mismatched combo could cause the taper to "rock" (and eventually loosen) when fully wound up.

Check that your crank arms are still "square" tapers (not slightly round) and if not try and match tapers when replacing.

  • crap!

  • Double crap! Both tapers are 2 degrees from centre, 4 degrees from each other. Read the article posted above.

  • dale has got turets syndrome
