Can't be much help, but for that usage a crosser might be a better bet. He won't have the extra weight of crappish suspension to lug around for one thing and it will be better suited to road with some towpath / firetrail balance.
Something like a kaffenback?

really just depends on what tyres and wheels he's got... I've got an old trek which would do the job nicely for example... I used to use it on the canal paths and all that. puncture proof tyres with a little width and he's good to go

i'd highly recommend the scott SUB series, very good, comes in either 26" (x 1.35-ish tyres) or 700c (x 32ish tyres), pretty well built bikes. i'd personally go for the lowest end model (sub 30) since it has v-brakes (sub 20 has mechanical disc, sub 10 has hydro disc), and therefore can get the rack and mudguards on there.
all around very good bikes though.

He's found one, thanks for all of your help. He got a Specialized Globe in the end. Wouldn't've been my first choice. Cheers.
Hi All,
I know some of you are purists and so may well write scathing replies to this thread but I'm going to post it anyway!
I have a friend who is looking to get himself a hybrid bike. He's looking for something he can do some light off road stuff on too - in the park with the kids, down the towpath of the river - but mostly on the road, hence the hybrid rather than a mountain bike.
He's been looking at the Specialized range and quite likes the Crosstrail. Does anyone on here have any experience of these types of bikes? I don't but I said I'd ask around for him.
Cheers in advance for any help.
