  • I'm gonna rebuild the rear hub on a really old Raleigh this weekend and don't have any grease. Which grease is best for an old cup and cone hub?

  • phils grease is good....

dont buy the white lithium grease, it dries out.

  • Goose dripping.

  • Dura Fucking Ace Special Grease.

  • Something from Phil Wood that's in my price bracket!

  • NiceBike RealGoodMegaUseful MultiGrease with Aloe Vera™

  • Lithium grease is fine though if you plan on looking after it.
ie, redo every now and then, keep on top of it, everything works better that way.

  • Nope. It's the GF's bike - do it once - throw it in the spare room with all my "spare" bikes. Mine's a different story - I like the sound of constant maintenance to be honest.

  • man juice . . .

  • Long time ago at at school I did up a teacher's bike for him and had no grease. Put the hub back together with butter. It spun pretty good!

  • I used to use vaseline as a kid - 2 of those wheels are still rolling fine.

aww.. just realised that sounds a bit off-key.

i use white lithium grease for everything eg bearings, lockrings, pressing in cups, seat posts

  • ^^ all depends on the quality lithium grease has its highs and lows... i use the stuff build has, german lithium grease normally used for xray machines and such like.

  • Have some grease from years ago called Black Gold, which is actually green?
Use it for everything, but dunno if you can still get it? Bought mine from Stif in Leeds.

Interesting link about oil and grease here?

  • Dura Fucking Ace Special Grease.

    Yes.

  • copper grease: anti seize

lithium grease: Good in potentially wet environments. Good all rounder.

bog standard auto grease will do a good job for most stuff too.

Marine grease: if you like to ride through a lot of streams and don't want to repack often.

People get over concerned over what type of grease to use* and buy silly over priced stuff in 25 cl tubes. Most uses the difference will be so little any difference is physcosymatic. Bike don't have parts which have high rpm or high temperatures to endure.

*There are some situations where the tye of grease is important but very rare.

  • i use that red stuff in the green tube. i think it has teflon.

  • i use white lithium grease for everything eg bearings, lockrings, pressing in cups, seat posts

Got to be careful with lithium grease. Don't go putting it on an alloy seatpost in a steel frame, it'll act as a bonding agent.

My fave atm is Nimrods' Purple grease, £2.95 for a reasonable size tub. At work we use finishline Teflon, it's a bit thick for some jobs though.

  • Will Lithium grease really act as a bonding agent between alloy & steel?

I had previously had a stuck seatpost that I thought was due to a lack of grease and now regularly apply lithium grease.

  • I use Finish Line ceramic grease for all wheel, BB,and pedal bearings and copperslip for anything that has to come apart. I have 1/4 of a tub of Black Gold left, its about 10 years old but is brilliant for headbearings as it never seems to set and is just about everything proof.
By any chance can anyone tell me if you can still get Black Gold, I've had no luck finding a supplier.

    Toodle pip

Has been known. As long as you reguarly clean the post you should be ok, but i'd still try and use either something synthetic with PTFE or a copper slip type anti-sieze.
