  • how could you get it that wrong?
a 10 second google search yields:

TRICROSS Tricross Rider Height Rider Height (cm)

    Bike Size
    49cm 5' 0" - 5' 3" 152 - 160
    52cm 5' 3" - 5' 6" 160 - 168
    54cm 5' 6" - 5' 9" 168 - 175
    56cm 5' 9" - 6' 0" 175 - 183
    58cm 6' 0" - 6' 3" 183 - 191
    61cm 6' 3" - 6' 6" 191 - 19

specialized also use size specific tubing to tune the bike relative to the changing rider size. so your 52 should seem flexy because the tube profile has been reduced. likewise if you rode a 61 it may seem too stiff.

the tricross is a big bike anyway, the standover is higher than most specialized bike, but once you analyse the measurements such as toptube, which is incidentally shorter than a 56 road bike, all makes sense.

another thing to consider with the sizing is how flexible are you?
less flexible riders will often go the size up if borderline because of the increased headtube height. that said though the riding position on any tricross is particularly high

and i anyone has the crosstop levers fitted, remove them immediately as they make the brakes feel like cheese

  • Yeah, I had the 56cm ordered first, but it was Paul Michel's (among others) testimony that the frames were huge, that made me reconsider. But then I reconsidered again, and I'm glad I did!

Just went out for a ride on it, nearly chucked myself over the bars a few times due to not being used to fixed. I got used to it quicker than I expected to though. The hardest bit for me is when you are out of the saddle, stamping the pedals, my initial reaction afterwards is to freewheel. But obviously I can't. Made for some hairy moments at first!

  • Have you switched your flip flop round then to be fixed right away?

I am sticking with single speed for the time being.

  • big girls blouse.

    :)

  • Go for it, don't forget unless you ordered one from Pearson's you will need a fixed sprocket as there isn't one fitted from the factory.

Yeah, mine is fixed already. Didn't even ride it singlespeed - not one to do things by half (I'll regret this, I wager.)

So far, its OK, bar some issues with me not tightening the bolts enough and the axle slipping. Learning curve is OK thus far!

  • As a newbie here I read the thread with interest and ordered (with some trepidation I admit). Looks like I bagged the last 56!

I think I will need to change the tyres. Any thoughts as to whether I can put 23 on? Sheldon seems to indicate that 25 is about the narrowest I can go.

Out of interest, when did you order that?

  • PM - about midday today!

  • Oh and delivery tomorrow morning as well. How's that for service.

  • Right,

I was thinking about building a single speed bike but stumbled across this bike. I could do with one pretty sharpish for work and note that Pearson's have one in my size (I am 6ft 1, so 58cm I reckon). I am new to the whole ss world having only ever ridden geared bikes in the past, so a couple of daft questions first up.

    1. This isnt fixed, simply single speed, so I can free wheel in it?
    2. I will be able to upgrade it easily as I get used to the set up?
    3. The frame/wheels will take my 14.5stone weight? The reason I ask this is that a mate of mine had a decent geared bike but he was a big lad and used to complain about his wheels/frame not being strong enough for his weight - this might all be bullsh*t but I reckoned it was better off asking a stupid question than just being ignorant.

I am still not sure if I will go for this bike rather than building my own, the satisfaction of building one may prove to be too strong...

It is single speed as standard so yes you can freewheel, plus it comes with a flip flop hub so you only need to add a fixed sprocket to go fixed if desired.

    2. I will be able to upgrade it easily as I get used to the set up?
I have added a few bits already. So should be Ok

    3. The frame/wheels will take my 14.5stone weight?
      I jump between 14.5 - 15 stone, I just wish I had your height ;-)

However if you really want to build your own then this is your choice however I doubt you could get as good a frame with carbon forks for the price of the Pearson's offer.

Wow - thought they sold out a while ago!

  • Wow - thought they sold out a while ago!

By the looks of their website now, only 49cm and 58cm left. Only very short people and very tall people need apply!

Been riding mine to work for a few days now, had a bit of trouble setting the correct chain tension but all that seems sorted now. I've added panniers to carry stuff that won't fit in my messenger bag and I have some mudguards which I haven't been bothered to fit yet. Managing to do the commute without forgetting I'm riding fixed and being chucked out of the saddle. All good, so far!

  • other stores are doing this deal (or similar) on 08 langsters and tricross. hunt around and post the links...

  • Not as cheap, and ugly. But cheaper...

    08 Langster London. £319

I've put a folding 23 on the front and it seems OK. not the easiest to get on but are holding well enough. Slight variations on tire dimensions may have an effect though.

  • these guys are doing it for £1 less than Pearsons. Same delivery costs. Just ordered a 56.

    http://www.hargrovescycles.co.uk/products.asp?partno=30997

how are you supposed to resist?

  • Ahh fuck. My gf has a £5 voucher for hargroves that she won at a cross race. I could have saved £6. I'm going to console myself that I would have paid £6 for the past couple of weeks of tricross joy.

  • Makes you wonder if anyone is buying the full-price 2009s ... and if they'll have to go into a bargain bin soon....

  • just bought a 56cm from hargroves... never ridden one. hope i like it. if not, gumtree for £300!

  • Hagroves price is now £349 wtf.
