Also i think you will find that the two chains are connected. Theres a pulley infront of the b/b shell. Presumably as one crank movestowards the rear of the bike it pulls the chain over the rear sprocket creating drive and also pulling the chain on the opp side back over the sprocket (freewheel) and bringing the crank/pedal back to the front of the bike.
