people that live in manhattan generally won't venture into brooklyn to go out unless there's a really good party on. people in brooklyn hit manhattan without qualms. the subway runs all night, so it's not really an issue. but i actually preferred going out in brooklyn; fewer assholes and tourists. brooklyn is hardly out of the way... it's like living in shoreditch and going into soho to go out.
i did though meet a woman when i lived in carroll gardens who was in her 60s, had lived there all her life, and had never been to manhattan. i was pretty impressed by that.
