Wanted: Read fixed wheel

Posted on
  • Preferably with cog + lock ring etc
Testing the waters for a fixed rear wheel since buying a fixie in london as a whole bike seems to cost an arm and a leg no matter where you look.

Let me know if you've got something lying around.

The cheaper the better (though it needs to be in working order obviously).

  • Fail.

    Meant to type "rear"
Can't figure out how to edit/remove...

  • As long as you run a front brake, the badly nicknamed "suicide" hubbed wheels will suffice. There are conflicting views on this, but as long as you run a brake for back up, I think they are fine. I run one on my commuting bike for about 6 months now and it's fine. If you are new here, and don't know what these hubs are, ask here, and I'll be happy to answer as I've built a few of these. They are ultra cheap btw. If you're willing to pay postage I can build you a new one for around £45 posted.
    Hope this helps, Rob

That kind of kills the joy of a fixed wheel bike.

Turns it into an irratating bike on which you cant stop pedalling for fear of bike falling to bits.

Dont bother with the suicide, total waste of time. If youve got £60 you should find a good wheel here or on ebay.

  • i got a pair dat are converted to fixed, campag large flange hubs, mavic rims and gatoskin tubs(1month old) £40. ive not had any probs with them, let me know if your interested. peace out

  • I have to disagree Fanny. I often go on long rides on the bike, I dont live in London so there are loads of hills, (feel free to tell me there are loads of hills in London), and I more often than not don't use the brakes at all. I've used the hubs off road too and had no problems. Even on my proper sunday best track bike, with proper track hubs, I run brakes, so imho they don't ruin *the joy of a fixed wheel bike. *Just my opinion of course. Tbh, if riding brakeless, I wouldn't use them. Rob

One of the main attractions for me (and most others I guess) of riding a fixed wheel bike on the road. Is confidence in the simple drivetrain combined with the ability to pedal brake/control slides in bad grip.

For me a suicide hub would never give this confidence, I would rather ride a cheap badly maintained geared bike.

Its like before I got my lockring tighened with a good tool, even though I rotafixed my sprocket it would still come loose every so often (was running a rear brake too) Just couldnt trust it.

Sounds like a bargain, the tyres/tubs are worth the £40!

  • Fair enough mate. I see where you're coming from, but they don't really bother me.
At £40 these are a bargain; ***i got a pair dat are converted to fixed, campag large flange hubs, mavic rims and gatoskin tubs(1month old) £40. ive not had any probs with them, let me know if your interested. peace out
***Converted to fixed? Not track hubs?
