Ok so heres the deal.
Trying to build up my pennine frame as my first fixed conversion for the tweed run but got a few things working against me. The main one being cash.
The headset needs a spacer(i think it had a centrepull hanger before) and theres no bottom bracket fitted. The headset also needs rebuilding as theres some play.
Have seatpost that fits.
Bars, stem and brakes not a problem.
Rear wheel needs bearings sorted, flip flop hub with fixed cog one side and knackered 5speed freewheel on the other. May leave the 5speed on in case i cant get used to riding fixed in time for next sat. Hopefully will be able to set my chainline so that i can flip if needs be and that one of the cogs will line up ok.
So, need bottom bracket cups(have a set but raleigh thread), have cottered cranks and pedals. And to sort the headset.
However,
I also have another frame(a Dayton) with an in-tact and working headset and bottom bracket. but with fucked cottered cranks. it also weighs loads more. Would it be worth plundering the bottom bracket and headset spacers from this one for the pennine? Both frames are 50's/60's and not raleigh so theres a chance the bb might fit the pennine.
Or build this frame up fixed, just replacing the fucked cranks with the ones originally destined for the pennine.
OR.
Fit fixed wheel to currently running carlton 5speed. have already mocked this up but the frame weighs slightly more than europe. The main advantage is everything works on it so its just a wheel/chain swap, done in 5mins but on the crappiest frame.
Have box of parts, just not the bb or headset spacer(have spacer on carlton but being used as centrepull hanger, also may have spacer on Dayton frame) but reckon i could build up the pennine or dayton frame only having to steal the front wheel off the carlton. Would ideally use the pennine frame as its light and shiny but would require the most work. Is the Carlton likely to have a standard english bb or could it be raleigh seeing as the frame is early 70's?
Got some time booked in at sargent and co tomorrow to get the wheel sorted at least. Just got to work out which is easiest as i have few tools and barely the money to spend on time with rob chopping and changing parts.
Long post, possibly meaningless. Just trying to get some ideas as which route is best.
Pennine=best frame/most work
Dayton=2nd choice frame/some work
Carlton=3rd choice frame/very little work/would rather keep as 5speed.
