700c are smaller, so it should fit... brake reach will be a longer/greater though.

hmm... anyone done it before? got any pictures?

Depending on the frame you usually end up with huge clearances,
which aren't very attractive IMO,
but if this is a beater its doesn't really matter. -

Were only talking 8mm difference in bead-seat diameters. Which with the right "drop" brakes shouldn't be a problem. You need a weinmann 630 is it?
Anyhoo stick a 622mm rim in and measure from your brake hole to the rim and get hunting for brakes with that drop.
The old boys used to ride 27's, carry their 700c sprints out to time trials, then swap over and race.

still have to collect the frame but when i do i'll pop my wheels on and see if any brakes i have will reach it.

I've done it. It fine, but I do run mudguards so that takes up the unsightly gap.
Not a very nice picture but this is how bad it looks without mudguards (In France on tour so weight saving)
and this with the guards

IMO 27" wheels look better in those frames then 700. you should whip some 27" in there with some nice big tyres and it will love much better than a huge clearance between the frame and wheels

Depends if it's worth the additional cost and how import athletics are.

search for a dia compe 106 brake, or an alhonga - they're long enough to reach, or should be.

You might also find that you need different calipers for front and back (if you're running two brakes, of course). I converted an old Raleigh for the gf and needed a long drop for the back, but a normal drop for the front.

27" rims and tyres are easy to get a hold of.

I really don't think it looks terrible to have 700c wheels where 27 should be.

just noticed that the frame is bent so i suppose that's the end of that. thanks for all the responses though.

This is the case on my Rory O'brien (Also 27" clearances). Drop was at least 10mm greater at the rear.

what bit is bent? bend it back! -

ye, i was considering that, the chainstay is bent. i would definitely bend it if the frame took 700c wheels but i think i would prefer look for another frame now as it's in pretty bad condition.
just got given an old viking frame but it takes 27" wheels. do you reckon 700c wheels would fit or is that a stupid question?
