someone clever once told me use the same brand of clear coat as the paint you use because sometimes brands chemically react differently

This makes sense to me. It could give a better bond between the paint and the clearcoat.

True about the clearcoat, it can cause the paint to bubble up or crackle.
Wouldn't look pretty but you could just spray some primer on the bare metal patches. It would definitely stick to the metal whereas spray paint by itself would quickly flake and peel off.
I'd wonder how well clearcoat would stick to bare metal as well. I suspect it would work better on aluminium than steel, but I've never tried...

it sticks great to blasted steel, not sure about untreated, unless it is well de-greased and cleaned.
hi there,
got a cheap frame out in here in canada for $20 to ride while im here for 4 months. it was pretty rusty, paint job was a bit messed up. so i was going to respray it but it started to look expensive for a temp bike. but i had already started sanding some of the rust/paint off. not too much jus on the forks.
is there any kind of sealent i can apply to the sanded parts just to protect it a bit. doesnt need to look good. just keep it going.
thanks a lot!
