Very weird. If you find the lockring is a bit loose you've probably just tightened your sprocket a bit more.

Ah yesss, thats just wheel spin it feels quite odd the first few times you do it. Its just the torque that is put on the drive is quite powerful and it just causes the wheel to spin in place but it feels like nothing happens on the wheel side. Since it has been so cold and dry lately the oil on the road builds up untill it rains, then it surfaces.

I have had this. It was the cog not being on tight enough so it would slip when starting off and then again (as i was riding without front brake) if i stopped hard.
the solution to my problem was lock ring off and tighten the cog up good and tight and then the lockring back on nice and tight.

Go the whole hog, remove the sprocket completely, clean the threads, apply copper grease, sprocket back on tight, lockring back on tight.

I have had the very same issue, and found warming the tyres slightly before leaving the house helps massively. Only the bottom part of the tyre (the part in contact with the road) needs to be warmed, so I just put my bike on the radiator whilst putting my gloves on.

I hold mine up behind my girlfriend while she dries her hair with a hairdryer. Works a treat. And we don't have any radiators.

could i run the tyre through the crack of my arse? would that heat it up sufficiently?
seriously, loose lockring. tightened it up. will look at taking the whole lot off at the end of the week. bike due a clean then.

You can borrow mine if you like - but you'll have to do the work here (SE1) as it is in constant use. I have all the other stuff you need, including a stand, so a workshop from home.

Make yer own out of an old steel seat pin and some left over 1/8" / 3/32" chain. Crush the open end of the seat pin in a vice drill 3 holes and get your punch and hammer out.

today (and two or three times before, but due to wet/slippy/icy conditions i ignored it) from a standing start, left foot on left pedal, i pushed down to get going. the pedal arm went round, the wheel didn't appear to. it felt very very odd. as if i was on a patch of ice, i.e. cranks spinning but no forward motion. i'm a bit confused. i can check the lockring, and am about to, but can anyone offer up some advice about what this might be? i don't think the wheel has moved forward at all. any info/advice? ta.
i looked at the patch of road i was on, no ice, no metal.
