  • It's says an awful lot that you can't remember either way ! :)

If I may paraphrase Sir Dog of Balls... Say not to drink and drugs, kids... ;]

  • What's so stupid about it anyway?

Well I don't have a proper reason, I'm just sad that one of my favourite gig venues is being torn down to ultimately build a train station.

  • Saw a brilliant gig there with the Farm (cough) and Boy's Own DJs and a massive fight kicked off on the upper level with people chucking lights off the tables at each other and him out the Farm on stage going (sorry Graham) 'ey ey, what about altogether now'...

  • Gutted doesnt even come close, has always been my favourite gig venue in london, nowhere else even comes close. Its just the perfect size, nice and dark and dirty and dilapidated, and having seen nearly all of my favourite bands there its really sad to see it go :(

But anyway, rather than mourn it I shall hold onto the good memories! Killing Joke, The Cardiacs, New Model Army, The Manics and so many other blinding gigs...good times...

  • I remember the Marquee going and now the Asoria, pity really, but hey look on the good side we get a shit chain pub and another train station, so people can travel the the famous Charing Cross Road and visit the site where London's famous Marquee and Astoria stood.

  • The best Marquee was on Wardour Street tho', where they shot all that great footage of Hendrix/The Who/Yardbirds... Loved playing there, they knocked it down and built a huge Conran restaurant... Bastards...

You played there !! Now that is cool !!!!!

  • It was a total dump, but you always got paid MU rates for a gig... Which was always excellent news for a starving musician...

  • Bouncers pulled me down the stairs by my hair once. It was at some glam/punk club night.

Saw Nirvana there in 1989 third on the bill with Mudhoney and Tad. There was a scottish band on the bill that night called The Cateran who were really good, Tad rocked as well.

I took Mrs W to the Astoria for our fourth date or something. We went to see Birdland ('slain will remember them). She hated it, but she still married me a couple of years later.

  • Can't believe you took a young lady to see Birdland and she still married you... God, they were a horrific group... ;]

Peter Hooton and Terry rowing over who had the best mob, Liverpool or Chelsea?!

I've got a copy of this, and I've still got the free poster that came with it.

  • I remember the street parties after.......everyone dancing to the police sirens and shouting ACIEEEEEEEEEEEED!

  • The best Marquee was on Wardour Street tho', where they shot all that great footage of Hendrix/The Who/Yardbirds... ... Bastards...

I remember seeing The Adverts there, one of the best gigs I've ever been to.

  • I do remember it being a bit of sweat box too !
One of my first venues in London and saw The Wedding present then many years later Gloria Gaynor .
I know what a variety of taste !

    Fixed

    JOKE! JOKE! ;]

  • Ha ha :)
I know but the Gloria Gaynor was free !
No excuse for the wedding present sorry ........

  • JOKE! JOKE! ;]

It better be! No-one disses the boy Gedge.
Saw Dinosaur Jr there on a night when they couldn't be bothered with tunes and still made a terrific racket. Also Kanda Bongo Man with Nene Tchakou on guitar which is what passes for a religious experience for me.
Kind of preferred the Town & Country club though; if only for a gig by Percy Sledge where he lowered himself in to the crowd (he's not a slim man) with great elegance. He was wearing a white suit and red cummerbund.

mad blond hair and tight black hipster jeans.

  • The place was a death trap (with shit sound on the whole), and it's a miracle there wasn't a fire and everyone died horribly nastily crispily.

What's more of a travesty, is the closure of the Dionysus chip shop a few doors down. I've seen some amazing performances in there.

  • I'm really sad about it too: Wildhearts, Machine Head, Mark Lanegan, Black Label Society, Extreme, to name but a few. Very happy times...

  • HMV have brought the Hammersmith apollo.

The Towering Adlers were great there too. But no-one ever came close to matching The Flying Creamshots.

  • sad

saw lots of shows there the last for me was battles and fuck buttons an strong ending i think

  • HMV have brought the Hammersmith apollo.

    Aye. "HMV Apollo" sounds weird.

I used to work for HMV and there were frequent hints from head office that they were going to venture into live music. Not really that surprising considering the state of CD sales...
