Cottered cranks and chainline setup

  • Hidihi all.
Will soon be going for the final push to get the Pennine ready for it's first public outing on the tweed run and just looking to preempt a few problems before they arise.
Firstly, don't have all the bits to hand but they will hopefully be winging their way down next week courtesy of The Bonk.
    So.
Cranks are cottered Raleigh with i presume a fixed chainring, so no sideways adjustment there. This being the case, what is the best way to ensure the chainline is spot on, or at least safe enough to ride til i get some more spare cash together to swap a few parts out?
The rear wheel is also not in yet, is there usually space on the hub thread for spacers to line things up a little better?
Sorry if the answers are totally obvious but i've searched here and sheldon but can't find anything relevant to what i've got to hand.
    ta.

  • Yeah I have a similar situation except mine are old cranks with the nut where its attached to the front chainring rather than cotters. Going into a Bottom Bracket which needs a lockring. Mine had two chainrings and I drilled off the smaller so that means the existing chain ring sits out a bit further too. Sorry no help to edmundro but I'd appreciate what suggestions people may have.

  • just found this previous post by Max:
The industry standard chainline for a double road chainset puts the inner ring at 41mm and the outer at 46mm. This is supposed to be a standard (so front derailleurs and frame makers are all in tune) but in practise it can vary a bit. You can of course use different length spindles and chainring postioning/spacers to alter it a bit to suit.

  • Ummm, very interesting but completely irrelevant in my case.
My question concerns a single cottered chainset, yours is a different setup/problem, besides, you've started your own thread for your chainline issues.
    Thanks anyway.

  • Fit rear wheel, measure chainline, find BB spindle of correct length. Job done

  • vic ran a raleigh single chainringed cottered doodah nice and straight on to a miche hub + dura-ace, no worries, give it a go, it will most likely be fine.

  • sick.
    will give it a whirl
if not, is it just a case of finding a few bb axles of various lengths then?
This bikes gonna be a bit of a mash up of old parts, but in a good way ;)

  • I've just put together a '52 Holdsworth with single cottered cranks, yep it really is about finding a spindle of the right length.
    Much the same as cotterless.
