Thanks for that. Just reminded me to wash all the salt off the Moser before it eats into the paint and chrome. Evil stuff, that salt, if left on a bike for any length of time.

I saw these salt mines near Krakow the other day. Amazing rooms, all carved out of salt and rock salt over hundreds of years of salt mining. See them if you go anywhere near Krakow..

Someone should invent some sort of force field that could keep mud, water and salt from spraying up onto you. I suppose a force field is improbable, so maybe it could be made from some sort of light weight material? plastic or aluminium? And maybe it could be tyre hugging in style to really prevent this from happening? Perhaps it could even be easily mountable and available in every bike shop? Is this just wishful thinking or could some of the worlds greatest minds come together to invent something to guard against mud?
I'd buy it.... unless it ruined the aesthetic of my "whip".
Peace

Titanium is rust proof.

A question for the scientists, please.
Even if ali or Ti, I understood that salt will damage the metal?
Anyway all washed off; just now need to defrost hands in the microwave.

Not really..
http://bmxmuseum.com/bikes/info/104/"Titanium is a great choice for a first frame as it will be able to sustain the harsh and damp weather in the tropics, not to mention salt water. Titanium does not corrode and is very inert. 20 years later and it still will look the same. This frame can be the workhorse in your cycling career."

My understanding is that Ti and Al forms an oxide layer that is quite inert, so it stops at that point.
Iron forms rust which actually flakes off so encouraging more oxidation, the salt just catalyses the reaction.
there is probably a metallurgist or chemist who can explain better and in more detail. -

Thanks lads, really helpful and informative links.
I'm under no doubt you collect yours from seamen.. :)
