Old style headset?

  • I'm helping upgrade a realy old beat up steel frame and it has a headset like this do these have a special name ?

    its a 1"

    just intrigued really

  • Well it's a Chater-Lea headset as im sure you'll have gathered. It's most likely 1", unless fitted to a tandem/trade bike. I can't give you the official term as i don't know where the Guvnor's hidden his brown brothers catalogue!

  • headclip, pre 50's. fork isn't threaded. very hard to find and go for good money on ebay £20+ if in useable condition.

  • Probably worth a bob on ebay, if you're removing it from the bike, this old type of clamp-ons are found on 1940s and earlier bikes.

  • too late, dales there!

  • headclip ! thanks guys

    not looked very far

didn't search headclip on ebay because I didn't know the term i tried 1940s headset but unfortunately that did not yield any results

mine isn't branded charter lea I think its a cheaper more generic copy. The frame doesn't seam that high quality but its good enough with nice lugs and tiny brass lubrication caps anyway I'm turning it in to a SS and I'm trying to keep the parts sympathetic to its age (except the wheels)

what do you guys think about keeping the head clip?

I was gonna put on a normal more modern headset as this will be my commuting bike

are head clips reliable? it seemed a bit wobbely
