  • As Tommy says, travel light (share tools, lock, pump etc) and put as much weight as you can on the bike, good shorts and chamois cream, good planning of route with rewarding food stops (not the Stonehenge services on the A303), and proper, steady nutrition. Use proper maps on the bike in conjunction with google satellite pics for the planning. Sorry if it's patronising (no idea how experienced you are!), but being able to do basic mechanics quickly and change a puncture efficiently can make a big difference to moral and time.

    Start looking at the weather in the area you're heading to get a feel for what to expect, and have an escape plan if it goes t*ts up or the weather closes in; following railways lines or having a mate who's driving down being on standby.

    Takes photo's and notes if you're planning on posting a report on here - something I regret not doing when I did a testing ride earlier in the summer - Oh, and most importantly, enjoy. Hope this helps!
