316miles / 3 = 3 x 100 and a bit mile days...... Against the prevailing wind.
Yeah. HTFU, as hippy might say.or 316miles / 4 = a mere 80miles per day. Easy peasy.

god!
ok heres a little story...
two friends did this competition though their degrees it was called "the better man competition"
it lasted the 3 years which was based around drinking, sporting, dating exploits and their degrees.... each thing was awarded with points both agreed by both parties.
the winner got a trophy* and* at any moment the winner could call the other person and say...
winner-"ahem?"
loser-"youre the better man"
ha ha ha...so very funny. ha ha. funny.

As Tommy says, travel light (share tools, lock, pump etc) and put as much weight as you can on the bike, good shorts and chamois cream, good planning of route with rewarding food stops (not the Stonehenge services on the A303), and proper, steady nutrition. Use proper maps on the bike in conjunction with google satellite pics for the planning. Sorry if it's patronising (no idea how experienced you are!), but being able to do basic mechanics quickly and change a puncture efficiently can make a big difference to moral and time.
Start looking at the weather in the area you're heading to get a feel for what to expect, and have an escape plan if it goes t*ts up or the weather closes in; following railways lines or having a mate who's driving down being on standby.
Takes photo's and notes if you're planning on posting a report on here - something I regret not doing when I did a testing ride earlier in the summer - Oh, and most importantly, enjoy. Hope this helps!
Chapeau

+1 be prepared!
your night ride to glasto was pretty epic... wheres the thread?

ha ha, long buried! Slightly ashamed I never got round to posting what few grainy pics I had, and my writing leaves a lot to be desired. Headwind all the way, heavy showers, lost and disorientated in the darkness, a few wrong turns, 2 punctures, and the muddy trek across the whole site with mud-clogged shouldered bike at the end. Made my summer that did.
I'm planning something tougher and quicker (speedwise) as soon as it starts getting warmer and lighter- I'll post when I get it together!

I can reccomend heading south towards Southampton and then heading through the New Forest. There are a lot of trails that are perfectly rideable on slicks. Emerge near Bransgore and head into Highcliffe. From here you can take the Hengistbury Head Ferry and ride all the way along the sea wall to Poole leaving you pointed in the right direction for Dorchester & Lyme Regis.

- yep, I was going to say that but figured it sounded slightly soft. A reward pack is ace; favourite chocolate bar/chilled can of your preferred booze/a kiss from a beautiful lady/man (delete as appropriate) and a brand new pair of socks.
You'll feel like a million bucks.

Ooh. Even better idea. Polo grand tour!
(ducks and runs back to the polo forum)
