Cardboard inside BB shell

I'm sure i remember reading recently about wrapping old axles with plastic to help prevent water ingress on older style unenclosed BBs, maybe your piece of card was soaked in oil before being fitted into the shell to help prevent this? Or maybe I'm just talking shit!

I've had this before and always thought it must be a corrosion prevention thing.
