  • will a bmx euro bb fit a standard english thread bb?
    i want bmx cranks
    any ideas

  • yes it will. Happy days!

  • thanks for the quick reply man!

  • i just posted this on another thread but...
'the problem with running fixed with bmx cranks is that the sprocket is held to the crank with one bolt, which when it is put under forwards and backwards pressure comes loose quite easily. there are two solutions to this, wither get bmx race cranks (http://www.alansbmx.com/index.php?cPath=38_92) which come with those spline things or buy one of these http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Tree-bicycles-...230115002r7112. either way it's going to be more expensive than some cheap race cranks. but if you can be assed with tightening up the bolt alot check http://www.winstanleysbmx.com/index....uicksearch=181 as winstanleys tends to have some of the better deals.'

  • BMX (tubular) cranks are inherently shit for riding on a fixed gear road bike.

On a fixed you feel rotating mass more, light rims, tyres, cranks & pedals give you an awesome feeling responsive bike.

The arms on profile style cranks are fuck heavy, the Q-factor is enormous, the one bolt chainring system gives you a tight spot etc etc.

There is every reason why it sucks.

If you want beefy looking cranks, get some truvativ omnium or other external BB single chainset.

If your desperate for something with a BMX label even Shimano DXR's would be way better.

you post the biggest amount of shit!!
do you have some on your bike, no, then shut the fuck up and don't mislead people.

i run profile's with a tree splined sprocket, no problems at all even with a 170mm crank. i know of a another guy in london that does this as well, albeit smaller chainrng.

max runs profile cranks with a normal front sprocket and found another bolt that fits more snug on the chainring, profile in the us also have something similar if you contact them.
    yes

    yes

The comments around Q factor and weight are not misleasding though are they?

  • those tree splined sprockets are so nice, such a good idea and they look ace too

  • thanks for the positives
i admire your bike so much dogsballs
    have the same bar/stem combo
and probably will have a bmx crankset on my cutter
was it hard to get a correct chainline?

  • the do a big Q factor, but once you ride for 30s you forget about it.

correct chainline was fine, just removed the outer bearing cap and used some washers.

  • ankle biters. Be careful with your ankle bone hitting the crank arm.

I have ridden BMX's with BMX parts from age 7 to about age 19.

Im very familiar with issues such as tight spot even on a freewheel bike.

On a micro-drive setup everything is more pronounced too (chain stretch/tight spot), and much greater loads put on drivetrain parts.

I admit I did not know about tree splined sprockets though, I knew DMR did some but still thing the negatives of profile style cranks on a track styled road bike make it not worth considering.

If you have lots of money to waste, and 'a look' is number one priority then go ahead of course.

What I would get if I was after stiff/strong/beefy looking cranks:

    Only £88 including decent chainring.

  • so, that was a yes, you don't have one. thanks.

  • q factor is big, but not really a problem, takes a bit to get used to, but does have it's upsides, i never have to cuff my trousers anymore, and for some things, like polo, trackstanding, backwards circles, etc, i find the wider platform to be a positive with it's slightly better stability.

and the single bolt issue isn't really a problem either, i check the bolt about as often as i check my c-ring bolts, and it rarley is loose anyway.

gussett do a pretty nice set of cranks/bb that provide a cheaper option from profiles/odysseys and they come in 165mm. stiff, light-ish, i really really enjoy mine.

  • Yes, you can get used to a large Q factor but the effects of it over a few years of riding may not be great. Worth knowing that if planning to actually ride your BMX cranked bike very far (pain/damage to knees, ankles and hips)
Guessing the bikes are more for pissing about on though as wouldn't have BMX cranks in the first place!
