Front fork front drop out size

i'm doing up an freddie grub racing bike and I've hit a small problem.

The drop out of the front forks are not wide enough to allow the hub axle to be inserted in them. after looking at sheldon brown and searching the forum i cannot find anything about different size drop outs. and i'm not having the same problems with the rear drop-outs as they are fine.

I'm tempted to file the drops to get the spacing as it is not far off....is this a dangerous option or ok?

help appreciated.

Not 100mm spaced?

I though stand western axles were like 10mm and Asian axles were a bit smaller like 9mm or 7mm,
where did you get it from.

sounds like you mean the dropouts themselves are too narrow to accommodate the axle, rather than the space between the dropouts being to small.. if so, either buy a new axle, or yeah, try filing the dropouts. Be careful though (er obviously)

I've filed fork dropouts before with no issues. just take it slow & use a file with a rounded profile less than the diameter of the drop out & get filing. Make sure to do it evenly on both arms or your wheel will sit askew

spacing is fine. it's the width of the actual dropout that is the problem - they are too small for the hub nuts (i think that is what they are called - but i'm meaning the bit that is inserted into the front fork drop outs).

All my front hubs & forks have that smaller axle (shimano, suzue, raleigh, columbus), 8.9mm or something. Thought it was standard?

had this issue with some relay old forks filed them carefully and they fit no problem

is there anything safety wise to watch out for after doing this?
