  • yes yes, "it'll probably be full of motorbikes" was just an equally stupid thing to say and i was only trying to point it out .. :)

It'll probably be full of francophiles.

  • it uses a lot of route 2 which goes near my parents house. it's not going to be some sectioned of bit of tarmac or painted bike lane but twisty country roads that while nice to cycle on you will still be sharing with cars.

It's not finished yet, we don't know what they are going to spend the £30,000,000 on, it could well be sectioned off.

    you mean smelly french bastards.

not in the bit i know. narrow roads with high hedges and ditch systems it's just not going to happen. they could do it with the bit across the romney marsh to folkstone but not the bit through the kent/sussex weald as much as i would like it to.

  • this sounds fucking brilliant! the ferry is long, though .. if only we could take our bikes cheap (or free) on the eurotunnel..
If you put them in a bag it's totally free?

  • Oh, i didn't know that. Do you have to pay for yourself or is that free too?

  • you can put them in the luggage rack bag less, not advised though few scrapes on our frames on the ride from brighton

  • Newhaven Dieppe ftw. London to Newhaven, easy day's ride. Board ferry late afternoon. Eat supper. Arrive Dieppe late evening. Hotel and off first thing in morning. Should be in Paris late that night, or at worst after one night stop.

French cycle paths are wonderful. In the west, on the coast near Bordeaux, it is possible to cycle for hours without seeing even another cyclist. Wide, beautifully maintained paths. Drinking water fountains.

  • looks to me like they're just joining up bits of already existing cycle paths (on the english side at least)...

All those that can't wait to try it out, why not cycle to the ferry before it's complete? There are these things called roads all the way there, perfectly legal for bikes to go on. There are even some cafe's and b&bs... although I can imagine some cycle themed one's would be a revelation... tables made of wheels, sitting on brookes saddles...

  • I read about this in the paper today too - sounds like a top idea to me. Can bikes go on the ferry for free?

  • I wouldn't mind sharing the lane with foxes and owls.

    this sounds great!

i took my bike on the ferry from calais to dover and i think it was around 20 euro, though i forget the exact amount. cars are significantly more expensive. it was kind of fun riding through all the lines and onto the ship and all, i'm pretty sure i was the only cyclist.. i would definitely do it again. except i thought everybody else was sitting in their cars (don't know how i missed them all getting out), and i sat on the very cold and hard ground for about an hour, already sore and exhausted, before i got up for a walk and discovered the warm and comfortable lounge area. so, don't do that.

  • (that fee covered me and the bike)

  • sick! can't wait

you probably should wait till you feel better

  • 2012 eh? Ha, where's the full high speed service by train? It'll take years longer. The ferry? there's a service tunnel in the Chunnel. Use that! it's only adding 22 miles.

  • Great idea, if allowed!

  • Great idea! I'd be happy to share the lane with marmosets and bag-ladies.

  • Might have to do a dry run to get the legs used to it, no point having this wide open track if you can't rip through it like a nut!?
I'd be happy to share it with immigrant road cleaners & the poor

  • Would you guys be happy without cars and taxi's to dodge though?

What a ferry with a lounge? Who ever heard of such a thing. That story's ace

And it's ace about the cyclelane. Will definately ride it when/if its done

  • i think they should make a cycle track on the ferry so we can race round it in cirles till were dizzy! :)

Genius, and a track stand comp on the weather deck!

  • I'd be happy to share the cycle path with marmots, manatees and multiple marsupials.

  • i'd happily share with a bashton, but not a mashton, you have to look out for them

  • we rode down the avenue verde which is a big chunk of the dieppe route in the middle of the night which was a good laugh, nearly had an eight bike pile up when one of us swerved to hit a hedge hog.

So be prepared to share with them but be aware of the consequences...
