  • 33m is 10 percent too long though.

    he wants 30, damn you.

hehe. i suppose i meant i was after whatever i-ron-monger is. i've seen it quoted as 30, 33 and even 30.3. when i did the 5k there last year i was working on the assumption that it was 30 and expecting to do 170 odd lengths. they stopped me after 150-something.

think i've got enough candidates for pools of a similar length now. thanks peeps.

started my training proper tonight. did 100 lengths of i-ron (so either 3000, 3030 or 3300 metres depending on who you believe) in just under an hour so i'm going to have to put some graft in between now and april.

anyone else up for doing it?

  • Bloody hell. Is that 100 lengths of crawl in one go?
The most I can manage is 30. Then I need a rest and a stretch before doing another 20 odd. I aim to be able to do a straight mile within a couple of months, but I don't think I could ever manage 5k in one go!

  • why not just switch to a standard olympic-sized pool or a 25m (shortcourse) pool and be done with it? it seems to me like training for the 110 yards dash when everyone else has moved on to the 100m sprint.

it'll affect your relative time this year, but think of how much easier it will be to standardise things in the future!

33m pools... shakes head in disapproval

  • @ badtmy - i suppose yr right. but i've got so used to 33 that i'd struggle in a 50 i think. plus there are no olympic pools anywhere near me and all the 25m pools i've tried suck. too hot, dirty, narrow lanes etc. maybe i should HTFU and ride to the nearest 50. or REALLY HTFU and hit the unheated lidos.

  • st georges in wapping on the highway is circa 30m.

you will be surpised how much technique there is with front-crawl. need to be able to "glide" rather than dragging yourslef along with your arms. 2 stoke breathing for distance swimming too. apologies if i telling you stuff you already know.

  • tooting bec lido is 100 yards long ,open air and HTFU

aiiii. it's all about technique. if you get it all working together you can pass folk with half their cadence with hardly any legs at all.

  • i'm struggling to do 400m of crawl in one go - tho have steadily improved since I started 3 weeks ago. Need to be able to do a comfortable 750m by June and leave enough in the tank to do the bike and run legs. I find my biggest issue is with breathing (although it is slowly improving). Hopefully I will have a eureka moment in a couple of months or so and it will all come together.

Was doing lengths at Putney on Sunday morning in the "fast" lane and holding my own for a bit. Then this 30 (at a guess) yo lady appeared - had to move over to medium pretty pronto. Never seen anything so fluid or fast in the water ever; the only time i have ever seen a swimmer create a "bow" wave other than on the telly.

  • it' all about the london fields lido.

  • with the breathing, tilt yor head slightly forward and then breath in the bottom bit of the wave ur making, its easier that way.

  • i wrote a whole big blah about technique and breathing and stuff earlier today. i really warmed to my subject as work avoidance and wrote a whole swimming tutorial thing. didn't post it as it got a bit long and i'd waffled about swimming in an earlier thread. if anyone's interested i'll post it here but if not i'll keep it for another time and place.
