Personally I would advise against this, as you will want to maintain high candescence, to save your legs. Having said that I like to aviod gears myself as I'm more of a runner and find left-right-left-right... etc more than enough to think about.
The easiest way to convert your bike would be to have a hub geared rear wheel built. That way you can switch between the two, without too much hassel. The problem here would be the large jumps between ratios, messing with your candescence.
Personally I'd buy a geared bike, as you can never have too many bikes ;)
