  • Thanks chaps,

I've just worked out it's my (miche)BB that's wobbling not my peddles...

    Bloody Miche BBs...

  • can you get a BB tool that fits onto a ratchet like this for all types of BB's?

You can't buy a one-size-fits all BB tool (if that's what you mean?). But, BB tools are usually just the head bit which you use with a spanner (or ratchet I suppose).

  • wiggle do a good starter tool kit for around £70....

  • I've found LifeLine tools from Wiggle a good and cheaper alternative to Park. Sufficient for the home mech.

  • Would that be this? My gf and I are getting it as a joint Christmas present to ourselves!

  • I got one of these recently - it's ok for the money, nothing has broken yet!

  • Van Damage - avoid shimano if possible. not that they're poor quality, just over-priced.

  • Pedro's need to pull their finger out and get their Trixie tool out on the market. It would have been in my stocking.

Emilia, that might be overkill, you probably won't use over half of the tools in there.

  • she has geared bike (not emelia but her GF). but agreed, toolkits are not designed for fixed riders.

  • she would be better off buying a smaller selection of tools for the jobs. in that ^^ tool kit there is 7 cone spanners, of which one might get used 3 spoke keys...ditto.

I got a similar set but cheaper with less tools. It was about £40-50 but does most common stuff. I've added 1/8th chain whip, chainring tool, 17mm cone spanner and some other shit I can't remember.

  • Cone spanners, spoke key, lockring tool, and hammer FTW!

  • Topeak Alien Multitool FTW

  • Cone spanners, spoke key, lockring tool, and hammer FTW!

    and a big screwdriver

  • Mmmm.. wodka

  • I've just worked out it's my (miche)BB that's wobbling not my peddles... So maybe i need one sooner than i thought? And would that be the BB or the BB Lockring that's doing the wobbling?

actually it was my right crank arm which was getting loose... not badly damaged, but was on it's way there.... Nice young mechanic at BLB checked it out for me for free.

Thanks for all the ideas. Still got a birthday to compile list for so all is not lost!

I like the look of that. Apparently it's out in January (aroun £20 excluding shipping by the looks of things)

  • I don't like park chain whips. had one fail on me once. I'm sure this was a one-off faulty product, but a chain whip fail is not fun.

You should make your own then only you are to blame.

Get an old steel seat pin, crush the end in a vice, drill 3 holes, find your old bag of left over chain, join a few bits then set too with a punch and hammer, or if your feeling posh and have 3 x joining links kicking about, your in!

  • Anyone got a clue where I can get hold of this Trixie Tool when it's finally available? I notice Chain Reaction stocks some Pedros stuff but no Trixie yet...

  • It's Greyville's, i'll chase em up at work and see when they're expecting delivery (if at all).

    Ta!

  • Basically I move to another place and can't use my dads tools anymore :(
Well, I'd like to know which Tools you recommend to have in my garage for mounting/dismounting my bike.

Is it a good or bad idea to buy single tools (thinking of acquisition costs) or sets of tools for other repairing?

Ah.. I have a 13 Wrench already for chain tensioning on the road and a puncture set :D

  • The lifeline tool kit from Wiggle is a good investment and gets you all the basics for £40. If you piece together a kit tool by tool it can get pricey.
