I think there's a clear distinction between cowboys and folk who simply don't have the disposable income to buy a tool that doesn't need to be used that often.
Most bike maintenance can be achieved with the clever use rudimentary woodworking tools and brute force. While using the correct tools is the best course of action we don't all have socks full of money.
