personal preference indeed, but clipless isn't exactly idea if you're using the bike for more than just commuting (i.e. going to town, etc.), especially since sounding like Robocop walking isn't exactly fun.

which is why we all wear mountain bike shoes.

you don't HAVE to go for clipless/strapped in when you first ride a fixed wheel bicycles, as long it got a brake, but very essential once you get the hang of it.
