I think its more so that people who dismiss the term fixie are hipsters, or at least snobby scenesters.
Its a bike ffs, and 'fixie' is a good affectionate term for a fixed wheel road bike, especially one bodged together with recycled bits. Giving a double meaning to the word fix.
