Well paul-michael, if you're just getting into single speed because you can't be bothered to maintain gears and want to get fit, then why the hell should you care if a group of people called hipsters also ride them?
Hipster is the name given to the younger generations these days (a la punk/mod/rocker etc), and is a derogitory term, which is unusual, because in the past young people have embraced the social appellation their elders have given them, even when the elders use it as an insult.
It is a sign of the insecurity and apathy of young people, as your own insecurity regarding this issue demonstrates. :)
