It's worth looking in TK MAXX from time to time, picked up a Helly Hansen Merino wool base layer down from £44 to £19. 'Technical Socks' are usually half price also.
The Helly Hansen with Merino wool is good for when it is very cold, too hot though when just mild.
Good call.
Also try m&s - i found a good merino there last year after getting vouchers at xmas. They look a bit grandpa, but as they're out of sight then that doesn't matter.

uniqlo are doing heat tech underwear baselayers 2 for £12 at the mo. not merino, but very nice and do the job nicely under a top.

I just thought I'd point out / recommend these if not done before. Not merino, but they are a cyclists cut, lovely and warm. Best I have ever used.

I started using HH, but they're too heavy IMO. Something thinner is definately better and it is what I am going to start using.
