Phil Wood Axle conversion

I have a 120mm fixed/free Phil Wood hub and have 2 130mm phil wood spacers that I have to swap with the current 120mm sized ones. The problem is I can only get the left hand sided spacer off ( I'm using two 8mm allen keys), the one on the right just turns the axle and i can't work out how to unscrew it, any help would be much appreciated.

Apologies if it has been said before but I searched without luck.

vice the thread using wood to protect it. then u can unscrew it.

thanks, don't have a vice though, tried it inside a dropout, worked for front as test, the back hub is too tight though. bike shop..

Just had the same prob at work. Trick is to support the hub on the side with the spacer still attached (an old sturmey archer 3 spd hub makes a perfect support). Then with a block of wood and a hammer tap the axle through the hub, it will draw the cartridge bearing out of the hub shell as it knocks through. Then you can hold the axle, without damaging the threaded ends, whilst turning the spacer with an 8mm key.

To refit use a socket bit to support the cart bearing in the hub, so as to stop it being knocked back out and use a socket bit or a drift the same size as the outer bearing race to knock the bearing and axle back into the hub.

Its simple persuation when you think about it.

Where did you get your 130mm spacers from, if you don't mind me asking.

Sent my 120mm spacers back to BLB yesterday, so hopefully they'll have the others sent out fairly sharply, after all i did order me hubs 130mm.

If they take ages then i may take you up on your offer teenslain.
