My Gaggia has stopped working. The pump sounds, but no water comes out. Either the pump is knackered or limescale (London is a hardwater area) has got the better of it.
Anyone had this problem? If so... how did you solve it?
I could probably swap the pump if I knew it was that... or limescale remover, but I guess coffee machines require something specific so that it's non-toxic and has some very specific way of rinsing it out afterwards.
I always used softened water in my machine. did you fix it?

That's brilliant.^^
Went to Square Mile Coffee roastery for an espresso tasting session last night. All samples from different Swedish micro-roasteries. Some good stuff there, mostly nice and bright and well balanced.
It's a good do, they have one every month. Tickets available from www.squaremilecoffee.com £5 which goes to Bikes For Rwanda.

Went to Borough to find out for myself what this Monmouth nonsense is all about. Ordered a simple cup of filter coffee and fuck me - if it wasn't the best damned cup of coffee I've ever tasted. Spent the whole day wanting another one but I only saw Starbucks, Caffe Nero and Costa for the rest of the day. I'm doomed to having to travel to one of the Monmouth places any time I want a coffee now...
Lucky I have a bag of grounds in my bag - yeah! Bottomless portafilter and Monmouth coffee FTW!

Don't say no if get the chance to try coffee from Tim Wendelboe or The Coffee Collective.

...although as good as the coffee was, the moment was nearly ruined by the American girl (they're always American aren't they?) in the queue behind me who was taking great delight in introducing her friend to Monmouth. She insisted on talking about the process of making coffee to her companion as if a) he was actually interested and b) she knew what she was talking about. When she eventually got served (a "cah-poo-chee-no" - in an italian accent) she started going on about the bread and jam they were selling. "Doesn't it all look marvellous? Their blackberry jam is to die for".
I know I've been pretty snobby in some of my posts in this thread, but some people are so pretentious I just want to tackle them to the floor and fart on their head.

Wendleboe and Collective are definitely on the ball. Wendleboe was world barista champion one year I believe, and Coffee Collective were all over the SCAE show in Copenhagen this year.
The Swedish roasters I tried are on this video clip from Square Mile. I'm the one saying 'Christmas' like a spooner.

'Kinell that is fast. I have to take at least 3 slurps of each cup before I would hazard a guess. It's no spectator sport though.

First try with the Monmouth beans - it's epic I tell thee...
YouTube - FAIL! Bottomless portafilter with Monmouth beansAnd the second go - lighter tamp and basket not loaded as heavily. Flavour's good but there's some bitterness in the aftertaste. I can see I've got some work to do on this one...
YouTube - Second try with Monmouth beansAfter using the illy stuff for ages, I'm finding it 'challenging' using fresh beans with different grinds. Fun experimenting though...!
Oh, and as you can see from the videos, it looks like I'm in need of a new seal. I can't face dealing with Gaggia's terrible customer services again...

The fresh stuff is much more alive

In one of the sets he only tasted two of the cups ;-)
I think it's much more spectator friendly than the Batista competitions - Actually it were a blast! -

Mooks, pours are looking good but defo get that portafilter gasket sorted, you're not getting the correct extraction presuure while that's pissing all over the place. Also, I am loving our organic espresso blend at the moment, it's got 2 roast levels of Guatemala Entre Rios which is a super jammy rich coffee with a really chocolatey Brazil Camocim base.
Jacob, put yourself in that poor bastard's shoes for a moment, having a cheap old robusta boiled for ages being spat into your gob by an old trout. Not pleasant.

You're very specific - all I ask for is a white coffee with one brown sugar.

VelocityBoy did you solve your problem?
Nope.
But from what was said it must be the pump.
No water is coming through in either direction, none back into the tank and none out of the nozzle end. I suspect it needs scaling too, but that it's the pump that is really the problem.
Has anyone tried (or got) one of those Delonghi Bean-to-Cup coffee machines?
