I've claimed through Hiscox for almost £2k when I had an accident and smashed up a road bike. They accepted the claim on the phone (within 5 minutes) and I had the money in my bank 3 days later. I had only been with Hiscox for a few months at that point, though I've now been with them for close to 5 years.

Just had a gander at the Hiscox site- with a £250 excess my annual bill would go down by £400.
Do you have to tell them about each bike, or are they automatically covered VB?
-
• #204
I told them about each of mine, just to be sure that they were covered. Specifically the fact that they're not OTP so you have to provide them some idea of value, and you should definitely take photos of your bike to be able to prove how you've fitted it out as I bet you don't have receipts and manuals for everything.

I cant remember who we were with at the time but when my house was done and bikes taken, the insurance company used Halfords and much to my surprise they were great.
They can pretty much order anything! they imported me a Bianchi from italy and even swapped it when i ordered the wrong frame size like a dick!

Been covered.
M&S FTW!

M&S quoted me £650, so a little cheaper than Esure, but a lot more than Hiscox...
I'll phone Hiscox tomorrow and ask them about the bikes- I don't have as many as Hippy but there are five of the little buggers around the house.

Strange, they were more for me. Oh well, they seem to offer a really good service.
-

£650?? How much shit do you own? Mine was only £400 or so.
-
• #211
In terms of "stuff", very little- the laptop that I am writing this on is the most valuable thing that I own.
In terms of bikes, not worth as much as yours I would think!
Two worth around 3 grand, one at £1,600, one at £500 and a couple that are worth maybe £50 to purchase and say £300 to replace.Maybe "West Greenwich" (Deptford) is a high theft area?

so hiscox will pay up on your bike if it's stolenon the street even though your insurance is home and contents?
i tried to insure a watch and was told it would only be insured for being stolen via break in.
anyone use these guys?

I got a phonecall from Hiscox about an hour ago!
They are currently looking at what their underwriters would want to do regarding my premium (currently quoted at £283 pa) to include the bikes.
Thats around £500 less than I am paying esure at the moment, but probably won't be after the underwriters have had their evil say.

I can't believe that M&S want to charge you so much Dammit. I've got around £10k of stuff in my flat that I would want to replace, inc. over £4k worth of bikes that I have insured off the premises, a small excess (£100 at the most) and I live in Haringey which isn't exactly low crime, they ask me for £360 ish. Maybe there is something in your application which would be better described another way and is putting your premium up?

I had a bike stolen at the start of the year which I claimed for- I suspect that this is influencing the quote.
That said I am still waiting for Hiscox to get back to me- fingers are crossed.

• #216
That'll do it.

i'm looking into signing up with m and s insurance thanks to recomendations on here but i live in a shared flat, and they don't seem to like that. does anyone here have any info or experience to help?
-
• #218
Last year I lived in university halls and now I live in a shared house and I found that most insurers aren't interested in providing contents cover because it's fairly high risk. Endsleigh cover my contents but LCC insurance I use for my bike - Endsleigh aren't really interested unless you have a single receipt for your whole bike, ideally from Halfords.... which is useless for a lot of us.

My missus took my old bike out last night. Chained it to the dustbin outside a friend's house on the Goldhawk Rd for half an hour between 8.30pm and 9pm. When she came out it was gone - thieves in a van had taken bike, lock and bin. Goldhawk Rd is busy at all hours so it's especially galling.
My question is... is it worth me filing a claim, or are my insurers (Evans / JLT) going to tell me it's tough shit because it was not locked to an immovable object?

• #220
tell the tht it was locket to a lampost..
-
• #221
A little bit unconvincing to argue thieves cut the lock then took it with them?? Normally they ask for the remains of the lock.
-
• #222
.
-
• #223
Can you not get a lock and then break it?
Has this been reported to the police as the insurance company would normally ask for the report.
-
• #224
Report your other half to the police

Be frugal with the truth if you want compensation. Just say it was locked to some railings or a street sign, you've no idea why or where the lock went. Nobody will pay out if it was locked to a bin, or a dog for that matter - sorry but 'tis true.
yeah, i have. though it was a long time ago and it was on my parents house insurance (so probably not much help to you as i don't have any details)...
my bike was locked up in a sainsbury's car park and was nicked.
my insurers organised for a bike shop to let me pick any bike that was of equal value to the stolen bike when it was new. the bike that was stolen was OTP tho so i had to pick another OTP bike. i had to pay 50quid but that was about it.
