  • lock-nut>spacers>cone>bare spindle>cone>spacers>locknut.

    one side of the locknut is knurled to dig into your frame (ish)

    have one side tight on the spindle (lock-nut> spacers>cone>) pack the races with grease and put in both sets of ball bearings. Put the other cone on as tight as you can FINGERS ONLY. Same with spacers if any and the last locknut, also as tight as you can get with just your fingers. Now when you tighten the second cone against the locknut with a cone spanner and a normal spanner the cone will back off on the thread slightly (away from the bearings), setting it up perfectly.

    Cones need to have some pre-load, it needs to be slightly tighter than spinning as freely as possible. The above method normally sorts it.

    If your spindle is bent you need to find some happy medium between binding bearings and too loose.
