@ Charco - the chainline was fine and chainring/sprocket were only a couple of months old.
@ Hippy - a chain wear issue was the only thing left when in the process of elimination and as it turned out the SRAM 3/32 chain I had had worn and stretched.
A spanking new 1/8 chain fixed the problem and three months later still no problems.

Yeah but I still don't get why the new 3/32 chain exhibited the slackness of the old one..

Me either, it left the bloke at BLB perplexed as well, he took the bike for a spin and it happened to him too, couldn't work it out, so we took the back wheel off checked the lockring in case skidding had loosened it and it had shifted slightly. So lockring got tightened 1 1/8 chain slapped on it and it was sweet as a nut, left us both flummoxed as the drivechain of a fixed gear bike doesn't require a degree in engineering.
Only thing we could deduce was that it was a combination of the sprocket and chainring being 1 1/8, the lock ring was slightly loose and that the 3/32 chain was stretched.
Who knows, was massively annoying but it's since been solved and no problems at all!

Hang on.. how did you get a 3/32 chain on a 1/8th chainring in the first place?

This appears to have been the problem from the off, wrong chain/chainring mashed together. Being the numpty I was with the lack of knowledge I had at the time didn't realise that what I was riding was slowly damaging itself every time I rode it.
Thankfully I am now almost clean of the incompetency disease.

I'm surprised you are still here to tell us about it :)
Did you have any chain throw incidents while running this highly recommended parts combo? :S -
• #33
Amazingly not fuck knows how I didn't fall foul
while running this highly recommended parts combo? :S
Had previously assumed that the sprocket and chainring were both 3/32?!?! :S not sure TBH. That was back in May when I was converting SS to fixed and have done some learning since then.

Think that's the answer.

Possibly. What was the question again?
And does anyone know where I can get a 144BCD 47t 3/32 chainring... I do like those Campy Record titanium ones ;) Has to be silver or grey... not black.

Dunno but I have a very nice brand new 3/32 SRAM chain that I don't need at moment.

I was having trouble running a 3/32 which was solved by changing to 1/8 which I should have been running from the beginning and not mashing together the wrong components. Just a case of me being special, on second thoughts should copy and paste this into the 'Confessions' thread.

It will run, but it will sound like a tractor and feel like one too because the chain will stick to the ring/cog..

The Dura Ace one? Saw that... only in black I think. Or does it come in silver?
I think I may be committing some cardinal sin by putting dura-ace on record.

Geoffrey Butler in Croydon, perhaps. They sell the TA ones, just say you need old campy size 8 speed. I got my 46t from them a couple of weeks ago.

I think I may be committing some cardinal sin by putting dura-ace on record.I have a silver 7710 45t 3/32 chain ring, It would be weird if the 47t only comes in black me thinks..

I know this is probably an obvious question, but here goes:
Is it ok to run a 1/8 chain on a 3/32 chain ring. I can't get my hands on a proper track chain ring at the moment but need to change my back cog so thought I'd just get a 1/8 chain and a miche cog for the back.Another question by the by: How can i know if a track chain ring (size 47) will fit on the cranks I have at the moment (Dura Ace 7410 - for 3/32 chains)
thanks!

• #45
yes
-
• #46
1 Yes, both chains have the same pitch
2 I guess check BCD & configuration of the spider, Sugino should fit
-
• #47
Yea you can use 1/8 chains on 3/32 teeth, but you cant use 3/32 chains on 1/8 teeth
and you need to measure the BCD.

Right, in my excitement to fit a different ratio, I bought this http://www.sjscycles.co.uk/product-Shimano-Shimano-TL-SR22-Sprocket-Remover-Tool-18412.htm
When I really should have bought this:
http://www.sjscycles.co.uk/product-Shimano-Shimano-TL-SR21-Sprocket-Remover-Tool-17689.htmThough I didn't purchase it from SJS.
Basically, will using a 1/8 tool on 3/32 components knacker them / will it even work? (tool is in shiny shiny packaging)
Cheers

• #49
Should be ok; you can run a 1/8th chain on a 3/32nd sprocket and the tool is basically just a bit of chain on a stick.

Sweet, so to clarify
SR 22 (1/8) = 1/8 + 3/32 (Kind of)
SR 21 (3/32) = 3/32 only
If the SR22 can cope with both, why the SR21?
Ja. I used a cheap SRAM 8 speed chain for qutie a while. No probs.
3/32 chains should be EASIER to come by than 1/8th. Roadies out number BMXers don't they? :) and BMX chains are often too short anyway.
