Had a similar issue with creaky noise coming from the drivetrain of my old beater. Gave the chain a good clean with Fairy liquid (managed to make half an old shirt completely black), and a decent amount of Green Oil lube, and now is silent AND about 3 times faster! V pleased I hadn't gone to the bike shop to get them to sort out the problem.
