don't know exactly, but I think chrome stuff gets 'dipped' or something. google might have the answer...

you can get those wire brush head things that go on a drill, might be a bit better than an angle grinder... just read something about applying 2pack etch to chrome to provide a key for primer...

so you thought you'd ask in a thread about stripping forks?
you'll need all that plus a bottom bracket and some pedals.
This assumes that you have already acquired a frame, fork and the other necessary items to complete this 'bike' thing that you're on about, you might be better off referring to it as a 'fixie' here as that annoys no one.

Sam, if you would like them re-chromed speak to murtle (31trum) he knows a guy that can chrome small parts, forks, cranks, bars, shoes etc its was a great price if I remember right.

I think they are saying that your post holds no relevance to the topic of discussion in this thread. -

How tatty? Try using Coke (the real stuff not home brand) and rubbing it on to the fork with the shiny side of scrunched up tin foil.

just imagine what it does to your insides!

have you ever laughed so much when you are drinking something that it comes out of your nose? I have, made us laugh even more -

It wasn't the coke that did the damage 'twas the forks.

Ah right, is it acid enough to work? Might give it a try. They are pretty tatty, the chrome is just starting to lift in places, but not flaking yet.

They should come up alright, autosol gently when finished. Before and after pics please.
Good luck.

Hand the forks into a plater, he will 'reverse plate' them. This removes the plating electrically.
-
• #20
Why not just paint over the chrome, give it a good going over with wire wool, plenty of etch primer and spray. Jobs a goodun.
-
• #21
Chemical removal is expensive,
but i think its mauratic acid that kinda softens the plating,
which then can be scrubbed of with a wire brush. What i remember from Science.

I read somewhere about using scrunched aluminium foil, so tried it on some rusty chrome BMX handlebars and they came up like new!

You could use caustic soda...Some powdered and very strong toilet cleaners use it...
Or the stuff that removes the lime scale from the inside of kettles.
I want to strip and spray some old chrome forks, as they're looking a bit tatty. However, it isn't worth spending the time or money getting them chemically stripped or sand blasted.
Is a wire brush head in an angle grinder a really bad idea? if it gets the chrome off, the bare metal could easily be polished smooth enough to prime and spray?
Thanks in advance
